Dr. Winfred Harris Book Fund
In June 2002, the Dr. Winfred Harris Book Fund was created in recognition of Dr. Harris’s dedicated service to Clark College and Clark Atlanta University, as well as his devotion to helping the students. The purpose of the Dr. Winfred Harris Book Fund is to assist Biology and/or Business majors with funds to purchase textbooks.
Dr. Winfred Harris is Professor Emeritus and Howard Hughes Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences. He is also an alumnus of Clark College (’55), where he earned a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry, and Atlanta University, where he earned an M.S. in Zoology (’57). He received his Ph.D. in 1965 from West Virginia University in Genetics and Biochemistry (the first person to earn this degree), and later a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Harris began his career at Clark College as an instructor of Biology in 1957 and was employed at Clark College/Clark Atlanta University for 54 years, holding various teaching and administrative positions, including Dean of Faculty and Instruction (CC), Acting President (CC) and Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs (CAU). During his tenure, Dr. Harris secured multiple grants in excess of a million dollars and made significant contributions to various scientific publications. He also served on a number of committees during/after the consolidation of Clark College and Atlanta University, including the Consolidation Committee for Clark College and Atlanta University, the Consolidation Evaluation Committee and served as Chairperson of the CAU Self-Study Principal Committee on Financial Resources.
The Dr. Winfred Harris Book Fund was established by his family: wife, Mary Stephens Harris (‘62 CC, BA); daughter, Stephanie C. Harris (‘94 CAU, MBA); son, W. Keith Harris (‘97 CAU, MBA) and “adopted” son, Robert Hogan (‘91 CAU, BA). Additional contributions were made by other family members, friends, colleagues, and former students enabling the Fund to be endowed.
