The Avon/Whitney M. Young Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1972 by Avon Products to honor Mr. Whitney M. Young, Jr. Mr. Young’s daughter, Ms. Marcia Boles, was Director of Community Affairs for Avon and she along with Mr. Fred Fusee, CEO, were instrumental in the $50,000 initial gift.

Mr. Whitney M. Young, Jr. was Dean of the School of Social Work from 1954 to 1960. He then became Executive Director of the National Urban League and held that position until his death on March 11, 1971. During his life he was a member of seven Presidential Commissions, President of the National Conference on Social Welfare, a board member of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Urban Coalition and numerous organizations, in 1969, President Lyndon Johnson presented him the nation’s highest civilian award, the Medal of Freedom.
