The Ethel Cannon Sherard Endowed Award for Excellece

This award was established in memory of Mrs. Ethel Cannon Sherard, Atlanta University class of 1914, by her daughter, Dr. Gwendolyn Sherard-Bishop and her granddaughter, Carolyn Edwards Jones. During her lifetime, Ethel Sherard was an entrepreneur, operating a grocery store for 20 years; a single mother, successfully raising 4 children; superintended of Arnett Chapel A.M.E. Sunday School for 11 years; twice elected Arnett Chapel’s “Woman of the Year” and statistician for the U.S Department of Labor. Mrs. Sherard was a strong believer in people pursing and achieving excellence, which is the basis for this award.
