The Presidential Consolidated Scholarship
Combining three scholarships of leading educators created this scholarship, because the corpus of the individual scholarships did not reach sufficient size to produce a fitting award.
John Hope, President of Morehouse College in 1929 was appointed President of Atlanta University. He ran both institutions for two years to bring about better ways of uniting them and to bring about new levels of cooperation between Spelman and Morris Brown to accomplish common goals. Trevor Arnett Library was built in 1931 as a common library for the three schools and in 1932 Atlanta University became a graduate school, with Morehouse and Spelman being undergraduate. President Hope passed away on February 20, 1936. He was buried on the campus quadrangle.
Dr. Rufus E. Clement was President of Atlanta University from 1937 until his death in 1967. The scholarship in his name was established in 1982 by the university under the guidance of President Cleveland Dennard.
Dr. Benjamin E. Mays was a renowned educator and President of Morehouse College. In 1982 a scholarship in his name was endowed by Clark College from the net proceeds of a UNCF event honoring him.
